Aiala, now I want to hear the 'inside' story of 'The Miracle on Fred's Street'!   ;D

Randy, Fred actually did tell me what he did to fix my reel (it wouldn't freespool when all the posts were tightened), but I freely admit that his explanation was beyond my junior-varsity tinkerer's comprehension. Suffice to say that there's no way in the world I could've done it, hence my unending gratitude to Mr. O.   ;)

And now, back to the regularly-scheduled Monofil 25/26 thread.   :)

If going with the Tib frame, check to see if the longer post screws will go all the way into the bottom four "foot" screw holes. They did on my P16 so I upgraded all four shorter foot screws with the longer post screws just for that little bit, at least in my mind, of extra support.

Aiala,

You did know that I fished my 27 on both the 2014 and 2015 SOA charters with 300+ yds of 50lb braid and a 40lb top shot with the drag set to 12lbs, yes?

Those little gears are tough, not sure about the brass, but I know the steel gears would handle 12lbs.
Wai, didn't you swap the pinion on those and use one with the reinforced ring by the notch?

Yep, did so almost two years ago. The original 13-155 pinion I'd would hesitate to go pass 7-8lbs on.

There are many of us that like these little reels, maybe Alan C. could make us some  heat treated ss gears for these and the Squidder as well. Can't ask him now, he has way too much going on at the moment.

These little reels are tough and a lot of fun --

But when upgrading, at least for me --

First comes a solid aluminum half frame, then SS & CF greased drags, Delrin UG washer, upgraded handle, aluminum spool, 20 lb mono or 40 lb braid -- that's it.

Then, in the unlikely event I blow the gears on a surprise large fish -- I just replace them.

This is particularly good for me on the Squidder Jrs. -- because of the bearings instead of bushings.

Just like building a house -- start with an unbreakable, solid foundation -- and you never have to worry about frame warp or twist with higher drag numbers.

Just keeping it a little cheaper -- and just my style and opinion.

Best,

This fish was caught on the same gears as these reels:

Mark, I just want to mention that the 29L-100 is an aluminum spool.
29L-  aluminum
29M- chromed  bronze
29P-  plastic

Thanks for the heads up, I got my info strait from Scott's web site and did not check any further.

Wish I could help out with which Newell spool fits the #27's but this is all I have as far as a model number.

I was told this is a Newell spool and I assumed the CN on the spool stood for Carl Newell but I could be wrong... you know what assumptions make.

Edit: I checked Scott's again and yep I was wrong.

I have a "Newell" spool that i've dry fitted before into my maroon "27" (a narrowed 26). It has the same markings as yours.

A quick check with the ruler on the rubber Boca Bearing workmat shows:

  • Spool diameter: 55mm
  • Spool width: 42mm
  • Axle width (tip to tip): 70mm

Hope that helps.

Yes this spool is in my 27 but one of the questions was would a Newell spool for 220 fit into the Monofil's and he answer is no. The spool for the Monofil would fit into the Newell but you would have a big gap between the rings and make the reel a line eating machine.

Wai, I wasn't aware of that, but it's encouraging to know!

As per your recommendation I've got the reinforced pinion, and also an upgraded drag from Lee. I haven't filled the reel yet... I've ordered some 65-lb spectra, do you think that would be too heavy? Also, what length is your 40-lb topshot?   :)

I think 65lb would reduce your main line capacity to below 300yds, but if you're comfortable with that then go for it. My 40lb top shot is between 20-30ft.
