Hey everyone, got lucky and scored a crusty looking 980 cheap. After a good cleaning and some new drag washers she is ready to fish, doesn't look half bad either. My only concern is the bearings, I soaked them for a bit inside of the cups and they work fine but I would like to squeeze some more free spool out of it by pulling the shields off and making sure they are in good shape, then replacing or cleaning and oiling the old ones but I am not having luck getting them out of the bearing cups and I have hit the point where I am thinking I may damage them if I keep prying aimlessly.

Does anyone have any advice on getting them out or could point me to a tutorial, I searched but could not find one.

Chris, those could be tough at times, the only tool that worked for me was the mini puller

Unfortunately, these are very hard to get.
Aaron" the supplier ", used to answer my email within hours, it has been a while since I've heard from him... I hope he's ok.
Back on that bearing, if nothing else works, go ahead and send it to me, I will get it off for you.

The magnet is slowing down your freespool. Those cast way further then my  spinners and I'm not a pro at it ;D

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

What a brilliant tool! I'd gladly snap one up if they're ever available again...  :-\

Ok, I remember seeing talks of the bearing puller a while back, now I see what it does. I am going to fish it as is and if it isn't up to par I will take you up on the offer Sal. Thanks

Your right Daron, just antsy since Sal speaks so highly of these reels and I am hoping it will do a good job pulling double duty for me in the kayak. Should cast great, and be a great live bait reel, plus my wife just got a kayak, so now I have two kayaks to rig and she has laided claim to my 440ss, 750ss, and if the need arises I'm sure she will reach for the 9500ss. She doesn't care for the conventionals, won't be too long before I am fighting my little girl to use my gear too  :)
