What modifications/upgrades can I do to this little reel?

RUSTY OLD COLT

ALANS SS gear sleeve , Ketas SS arm and a larger handle , upgraded drag washers and a Tiburon frame would be a good start

LowCountry

Where can I purchase all of that? What size handles?

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Easy boys  ;D ;D ;D This ones a gift to my son and I have all those trinkets you speak of. I'm so sick now I have a black Tiburon frame coming because I don't like the color scheme. Topless of coarse as he will be 30  ;D ;D ;D I'm going to do one for myself with all the AT website mods  ;D ;D ;D

yeah, drags first, then a handle.  gear sleeve if you are going to lean on the reel pretty hard, otherwise leave well enough alone.  that's about it!

Standard answer Alan... You have to look at the sic human aspect  ;D Feeling like you actually built/designed something then put it to use can be quite exhilarating and most definitely can give you a sense of self accomplishment... For me it's just something to do while I sip on a brew  ;D This is only one of many reasons why this website works so well.

In the old days (12,13 years ago) -- the only thing we would need to do to a salt reel like a Jigmaster or Squidder, would be: Accurate or Tib frame, aluminum spool, upgraded drags, power handle, and the Newell plastic brown bushings in the case of a 500, 501, 505, or 506.  These would handle any 30 or 40 pound rig.

I never even put the accurate side plates on unless a client specified them -- they look good, but just get scratched up, and you eliminate the possibility of a quick change-out of your spool.  The factory plates are good enough, and they look good with an aluminum one piece frame anyway.

I had an account with Carl Newell -- and would just order his drags, bushings, and spools by the bagful.

Still have a lot of the old smooth marbled brown thin drags from Carl in bags.

But nowadays, for a good, serviceable reel -- I would just go with CF Cal's greased drags, better bushings, power handle and crank from Alan Tani & Keta, and a Tib frame.

Maybe a SS sleeve, but only if really cranking heavy loads constantly otherwise the factory sleeve is OK until it wears out.

I try to keep the cost down -- just what is necessary.

Anything above that would be personal preference based on your fishing needs.

Fred you are right. I like a little extra just because I want a little extra, not because it's needed. Keeps the mind & hands sharp. Just like any hobby I guess. We need to go fishing or like you said before get together for a cup of coffee.
