What are the approximate prices I would pay for each size of Senator? Talking about standard sizes, components, and not mint condition or anything. Looking for low-end estimates because I don't have a problem cleaning them up, as long as the chrome is still there  >:(

Looking to build up a collection consisting of 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 6/0, 9/0, 10/0, 12/0, 14/0, and 16/0.
Also, as far as line weights (mono), do these sound right?: 20 lb, 30 lb, 30 lb, 30 lb, 50 lb, 50 lb, 80 lb, 80 lb, 130 lb, 130 lb

MarkT

3/0 30#, 4/0 40#, 6/0 80# works for me.

1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 about $30 for a working model.

  6/0 about the same

9/0 $60-$70 for one in usable shape

  Half decent 10/0 $150-$175

  12/0 $200 for a good user model

  14/0 $300 for a decent working model

16/0 good luck finding one under $550-$600, that's about the lowest, then sky is the limit beyond that depending on condition or rarity (just ask Broadway  ;) ;))

Okay so about $150 for the smaller ones. Then another $200 for the medium sized ones, and for the big three sky's the limit.

Did anyone see the 16/0 that sold for $360 a while ago on eBay? Full working condition, if I had some more cash on hand I would've bought it. Was like $60 to ship, it was in Spain or something.

Shark Hunter

Ted pretty much nailed those prices.
For me anyway. I have a set price and I stick to it.
I have enough Senators to fill that room of yours Biggie.
The 16/0 is a different game.
You have to know the details of what you are exactly getting.
I have four in my possession. Three of them are hot rodded to the hilt.
All One piece spools. Anywhere from $450 to $750.
I had this one on the Kitchen table for quite some time.

I'm not arguing with the "Penn Guru" but in my opinion, I believe you're way off on those numbers.
Not bad from the 12/0 and up, but way off from the 1/0 to the 9/0.
Yes, at the moment you will see lots of jiggies ang 4/0's at a rediculous price on line, but that's because of this site offering all custom parts for those. One day those will be valuable again.

As stated above, just my opinion.

I agree, Sal.  More specifically, I have never found the small Senators at anywhere near $30.00.

I have received  a 'good deal', only to then replace all the shiny stuff, drags, etc.

But, I'm preaching to the choir.  Ted's a Professor of acquisition skill.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

I'll pitch in my .02 only because I've been on the hunt for similar reels on eBay these past few months.

Prices are really going to vary on how long you are willing to wait for a deal...

I've see 1/0's go for $30 for a really beat reel or one just sold for $153 with a box in New condition.

2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 6/0 can usually be had for under $50 (As long as you don't want a H, HL or HLW model)

9/0 will be right around $100

10/0 Have really been varying lately - I've seen two go for $120 in the last two weeks.  Meanwhile some folks are asking $300 for them.

12/0 Vary from $150 up to $250

14/0 seem to be going for $250 - $300

16/0 are in the $600 to $850 range

I purchased my 16/0 for $500 from a private seller, if he had listed it on eBay he wanted $700 to cover fees and what not and get a little extra.

You are getting a lot of info, some similar and some different.  Use your best judgment and stick to your budget...also have fun  ;D

Ran, the problem I see here is that Ted is basing the numbers to what he sell those for ::).
Ted forgets that most of us don't have 100 extra large tupperware containers full of reels from his Dad shop as he does ;D.
The 1/0 alone will usually not go for less than $60 and  around $100 for one in great shape.

I've seen the same prices Coastal Dan has, it seems we may have the same Ebay search terms working. lol I've seen some 4/0's and 6/o's go for cheap, but they were corroded bad and beat up. Good shape ones seem to be selling for a good bit more. I felt lucky when I got my aluminum framed 114HLW in great shape shipped for 95.00.
Good luck fishing,

Thanks everyone for the replies. Looking at recently sold Senators on eBay, here are the low-ball prices I came up with:

1/0 is at least $30 shipped (one went for $30 with free shipping, one went for $18 with $12 shipping, one went for $23 with $7 shipping)
2/0 is at least $25 shipped (one went for $16 with $9 shipping, one went for $20 with $5 shipping, one went for $25 with free shipping)
3/0 is at least $20 shipped (one went for $13 with $7 shipping, one went for $20 with free shipping, one went for $11 with $9 shipping)
4/0 is around $25 shipped (one went for $16 with $6 shipping, one went for $15 with $11 shipping, one went for $20 with $6 shipping)
6/0 is at least $25 shipped (two have recently gone for $15 with $10 shipping, one of which had a handle upgrade that is probably with over $15 anyways)
9/0 is at least $75 shipped (with the chrome still there, you're looking at a $65 reel with $10 shipping)
10/0 is at least $150 shipped (one went for $130 with $20 shipping)
12/0 is at least $110 shipped (one went for $85 with $25 shipping)
14/0 is at least $275 shipped (one went for $245 with $30 shipping, a nicer looking one went for $250 with $35 shipping)
16/0 is at least $440 shipped (one went for $400 with $40 shipping, and there's one for sale now that's $500 with $80 shipping)

I only took into account reels that didn't have a ton of chrome pitted and that worked. I don't mind getting in and cleaning the reel up, but if there's chrome missing then it's not worth my time. There were 9/0s going for like $40 shipped, but not working ones or ones where there is corrosion and no chrome left.

So if I spend the next few years collecting these reels, I can probably get them all for around $1,200 and I might put another $300 into filling them and say another $100 into minor parts that need replacing. $1,600 to build my collection isn't too bad.

Any ideas on how to not spend $300 on line for those reels?

The hard part is the market price changes week to week. In the area I live there is probably 15 9/0 for sale on offer up and let go ranging 50 dollars and up. The same market only has one 16/0 and it is priced at 1000 dollars. The 4/0-9/0 will be the easiest to find.  Good luck

Going to advanced search on eBay, and clicking on sold listings will give a person a good idea of price point on everything that has sold in last 3 months

It's a great way to see what similar items are selling for. A quick search shows Sal is right, I was way off. I said $40 for 1/0 thru 4/0. I was waaay too high. I found at least a dozen 1/0 that sold for under $40, and almost 2 dozen 2/0 that sold for less than $40. Patience is the key, and never get head over heels in love with one reel. Another will come along, and another, and another, till you find the right reel at the right price.
