A while back I posted some pics of my late father in law's reels that I had redone to pass along to my daughter s. "Papa's old 155 Beachmasters". Why?.............well because my daughters wanted to fish on a half day boat on our annual San Diego vacation. They are 13 and 11 years o
D and I figured it was about time to let them.
That love to fish and they are good, patient, students of the game.

Obi-wan-pennobi (Sal), was gracious enough to help this newbie along, and their "narrowed magged" Beachmasters are as smooth as silk! Also, for my wife, I picked up a Monofil 25 and had it"Sal-in-ized" 😀
We are ready for kelp paddy Calicos!
Jump to the last week of July and off we go.

Fishing half day boat s is very unpredictable sometimes. We went out of Seaforth and their style right now is this.....

A.M. boats---out to 175-200 feet of water and fish for rock fish with dropper loops and cut squid. (Lots of cranking😕)

P.M. boats....closer to shore at the kelp paddys. (Guessing 30-45 feet)
Live-lining anchovies and sardines with a 2/0 bait hook.

My wife and I went out beforehand and tried both.

We figured the girls would enjoy live baiting for Calicos better, so we decided on a P.M. trip with the girls. We were all excited when the day arrived! The girls were ready early, each with their own combos.

(They each picked their own colors of heatshrink for the grips)

So...I still haven't really figured out how to do this!!!!!!

At the landing waiting for the A.M. boat to return

Sorry guys I'm trying!!!
So, the plan...
Mom....your on your own
Girls....get your own bait, and I'll help you get it out
Dad(me)....run back and forth between girls, help land fish, untangle bird's nest, forget to take enough pics, re-tie rigs, and basically try and teach!

Sam with me running to a new spot

Sam grabbing a snack....notice the shirt

bhale1

....and then I here Samantha from the stern..." Uhm, this one feels alot bigger"""...I didn't get there until it was time to pull it over the rail...she did it all on her own...
Pics don't do it justice, pretty fat fish...in fact she won the JACKPOT with it!!!
Sal may recognize this reel!!(thanks again Sal)

And that's how the day went! Lots of fun!
Every time we pulled up to a new paddy (bed) the bite was on! But it would slow after 10-15 minutes, once the sea lions found us. And that was when my wife would put down the Monofil 25 (sorry Sal), and pick up her Daiwa BG coffee grinder, grab the biggest bait she could, and lob it out! TWICE!!!!, Yes two times that resulted with her hooking nice Yellowtails.... surprise!!

But, they would dive and wrap around the kelp.....game over!
"Gotta get it over the rail if you want to knock Samantha off the Jackpot podium mom"...didn't happen that day..lol
We had a blast!! Can't wait til the next trip, maybe I'll even get to wet a line....

Guys, let me apologize ahead of time for how messed up this post got....my laptop is all messed up!!! I'm doing this from a little 7" tablet....I'm computer illiterate...but getting better😀

Beautiful Family!
Great memories being made there.
Dang nice Calico, I definitely see that'un winning the pot...  Hooyah!

What an awesome day, I love days fishing with my kids.
I was born/raised in San Diego and have spent many a day on the cattle boats doing the same thing y'all were.

bhale it looks like you had a great family outing.  The girls all have happy faces.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

What a great day! JP to boot on a fat calico! Nice family you have there.
Took my Grandkids on the 1/2 day last week, nothing better!
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Way to go. Kids need to fish or we will loose the whole life style moving forward.

I always love to see the bendo pics of someone hooked up.

P.S. That checkerboard is nothing to sneeze at on a half day boat. WTG girl, and pops too for making it happen!

Great family outing. That is what the kids will remember as they grow older much more than a silly electronic gadget.
Way to go!

Excellent report Brett! I think you did a great job posting.
I tried to flip a couple of pics, but somehow wasn't able to.
Keep making memories with your beautiful family.
Best!

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Thanks, Brett --

Good report, and a beautiful family!

I expect they will want to go out again, very soon...

I spotted those shirts right off!  They were locked and loaded ready for game.  That is about as good as life can get.  Fishing with the whole family gotta love it.

Ohana....
Thanks all! Yes, we had a great time, and the girls loved it!  It will now become part of the annual trip for sure!
The girls are very patient, and love to fish, so that helps alot. I appreciate the kind words, and more importantly the advice and assistance from everyone here at the AT family....and a big shout out to Sal !!!

Trying to get a trip in next month for trout in the "high country" here in AZ! That is if School, Theatre group, Band, and swimming schedules are co-operative 😀😀😀  We fit it in last year tho......

P.S.....like I said I'm sorta computer challenged!!! When I chose the pic from photos on this tablet it wasn't sideways....but you get the picture..(pun intended)... hopefully new laptop next week...this tablet is better than nothing, but a pain!!!!
