hey amigos,

any body here use a waterproof camera when going fishing?
I used to have cheapo fuji waterproof camera then I upgraded it to a panasonic lumix waterproof one, this lasted 2 years until I forgot to close the lid and went poofff in a pool, currently I taking my pics when going fishing with my cell phone is samsung s7 edge which takes really nice pics even in low light.
soo, now Im spoiled, I dont want to go back to the cheapo waterproof camera since I read in many reviews that a good phone will take better pictures than a cheapo waterproof cameras, but I want to stop using my phone on a panga, way too many stories of phones sliping on wet hands direct to the water.

anyway, I had my eyes on the nikon AW100 or W300 model which cost $300-370, many camera sites rate it as a overpriced point and shoot waterproof camera with low quality picture for the price and still "any" expensive phone might take better pictures overall than that camera.

soooo, now Im lost, I might go with a referral camera from any of you guys, I really dont have a max budget , the best one is supposedly Olympus tough model but dont want to spend that kind of money ($450-$550), I better off buying a DRSL camera for $600 and get the fuji for $150 and forget about it.

What Fuji did you have?  My XP70 takes good photos, the XP120 should be better.

Correctamundo Lee!

Fuji Finepix XP120 is a great WATERPROOF camera, that is my camera choice while fishing with Dominick out of Los Cabos.

Costco has it on sale FOR $149!

And it floats!!!

Good luck Steelfish!

A lot of cameras 📷 are out there.  I like to have a zoom, and now have a go pro 6 it's got voice command controls and can take still pics, w playback screen.  It's waterproof and tiny but it's most likely for action video.   Cell phone is better than nothing and can send pics easily.  My 2 cents is take both or all 3 eventually?🧜‍♂️🙈

I have the older Olympus TG-2...it's a killer outdoor camera. I saw some on fleabay for around $100. 8)

nice, thanks for the input guys, actually the fishing pictures arent going to appear on a fishing magazine so, on a double thinking and reading that Wayne is having good luck with his fuji XP120, I might go that route, better that one right now than keep saving for the Olympus and losing my cell in between.

I now have to check some online prices to compare vs the stores on my next US visit.

@Mo, I will check those olympus previous models, many times the new models are same picture quality just wifi, bluetooth, etc as upgrades, I dont need a stinking wifi to take pics  ;D ;D

I use a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone that has an IP waterproof rating. I combined it with a Lifeproof waterproof case just to be safe. It has yet to let me down and I've been punishing it. It's been fully submerged and it's alive and well. I use it in downpours and in the pool without worry. Takes good pictures -- 16 megapixels -- and it's last gen technology so it's super cheap now.

I find the only issue with phones over digital cameras is that they only have digital zoom, no mechanical zoom. Also, the Samsungs have an issue with macro mode. Nevertheless, I'm really happy with my setup and I only have to worry about one device. It does everything. I play podcasts and Pandora on my kayak while I'm fishing. I take pics, video, calls, emails, etc. I optimized all the settings for max battery life. I get over 24 hours even while steaming Youtube and Pandora. Has a replaceable battery (only $15 for a new Anker). Also, has a slot for a micro SD card. Can expand the memory another 128 GBs. Everything in one package for about $100.

Here's a pic of the St. Sebastian river for comparison.

All I have is a ten dollar water proof case for my phone.  Samsung S-6 Active.  It's stuck in my pocket with a lanyard to a belt look.  It's been on the ocean hundreds of times and dunked/submerged dozens of times.  Good photos.  Video is OK but I can't get it together to start recording if something exciting happens.

nice call, mine also have the waterproof rating thats why I keep using it, because of the armor case I have on it I can I also plug it to a floating lanyard and keep a peace of mind in case it fall to the sea.
Im not in a hurry for the camera, so I will check my options

I mean with the way technology is going, I wouldn't be surprised if they stop making point and shoot cameras in the near future. I think they will always make DSLRs because they serve another purpose but modern phones can do almost everything an off the shelf camera can do. The video camera on mine shoots in UHD 4k.

If you know your going fishing or whatever, you can temporarily disable the unlock pin/pattern to open up the phone faster. Activate encryption mode to be on the safe side.

My Nexus 6 phone has a bypass to turn the camera on fast. Press the power button twice fast and camera pops up.

Maybe yours has this too?
