I have my penn Surfmaster apart and have replaced the drag washers, I am having trouble reassembling the main gear with the bridge with the anti reverse dog. I can't seem to get everything back in place with the dog and spring assembly. Problem is when I dissembled it the dog and spring were separated and now I'm not sure how they should be configured, whether the dog is assembled on the screw or the pin on the interior of the right side plate. The schematics really don't show it's assembly. I have tried both but keeping everything in place is not working. Help is needed.

The dog goes on the screw.  The spring goes around the pin.  I have found Scott's video to be very helpful in getting my Surfmasters back together:  ("Penn Reel Conventional Side Plate Rebuild").  Instead of three hands, or a pair of gifted ones, use tape to hold the bridge screws in place while you wrestle the plate, bridge, dog, and spring.

This is a double dogged 9/0, but you get the idea.

Thank both of you guys, a picture is worth a thousand words. I reassembled the reel in no time and is working better then ever, with Bryan's drag washer system and Cals Gease. I used 321 and the free spool is outstanding.

if there's a will, there's a way,  also that's why they make tweezers and sliding screwdrivers that hold the little screws, not to mention small needle nose pliers, tools and tricks of the trade, unfortunately everything is stainless or brass and when you drop a screw etc, you can't use a magnet to pick them up,  enter the grabber with rubber cups

Yeah, my left hand can be a clamp or a hammer, and not much else.

The flat spring in the surfmasters and the 1/0 senator are the hardest things for me to install. It usually takes me  a few tries .I use a pair of  locking surgical clamps to hold the edge of the spring during assembly and I tape the screws which frees up some fingers   Doug

Once I looked at the picture and video it was easy, that flat spring is tough without using tweezers..which is what I ended up doing. A few pictures of the little guy.

Having arthritis in both my hands doesn't help much either, but I don't let that stop me from my work on guns or anything else for that matter.
