The SuperBowl is this Sunday.  It's the only Sunday of the whole year when there is no weekend warrior boat traffic to screw up the fishing.

My wife and I took a trip to Florida a couple of weeks ago. It was a combined trip, flea markets and surf fishing. This was a few days after the panhandle got snow, so it was still cold and windy. The first time we hit the beach, in Melbourne area on Friday, it was 45 degrees and very windy. The current had a 6 oz Sputnik sinker on the beach in minutes. We gave up and hit a few more thrift stores. We went to flea markets in Melbourne, Webster, and Mt Dora. Sunday isn't the day for Webster, so we were disappointed. The others were good. I ended up with some more Penn reels I didn't need. I bought a 650SS, a 714 with a 714Z handle, a 710, and a 710Z.

Monday the weather turned better and the water cleaned up. We fished Juno Beach Monday through Wednesday. We caught a lot of Bluefish, 18-24 inches. We caught 6 new species, Bonefish, Permit, Palometa, Finetooth Shark, Threadfin, and Spot Tail Pinfish. We also caught Pompano, Smooth Dogfish, Jacks, Gulf Kingfish. The Kingfish, or Whiting, should probably count as a half, as I only reeled in the head. I fished a wire Shark rig every day, but the Blues were so thick, I never got a bigger Shark to bite. I was surprised to catch one of two Finetooth Sharks on a piece of shrimp on a size 2 hook.

The only classic reel I had on this trip was a Penn 710Z, and it definitely had the most action. Matched with a 10' 1-4 oz rod, the Blues and Sharks were a lot of fun. I have caught Blues up to 31 inches in Maryland Surf, with heaver rods and 12 oz weight. These smaller Blues in calm water on light tackle were better fun.
