Sal, what do you mean by outfish? can you define the word? and do you know how much drag this reel pulls? I `m not trying to be confrontational, but genuinely interested.
cheers

No nothing like that Basto, just that you could fish that reel all year long without doing anything to it and it will never skip a beat. I don't think the new stuff is up to that task :-\. The reel should be able to handle 25 to 30lb. The one piece frame, the ss sleeve and the drag upgrade make this reel happy.

Sal , Head boats in florida use 60 mono on 113h's and I don't think they ever clean them except for maybe a wash down. It is bottom fishing on their 113h, but I think your 114 will handle 80 mono...

I'd say spool that beast with 100# braid with 30#, 40#, 50#, 60#, and 80# top shot option based on the type of fishing you will be doing that particular day.

A reel for all occations, for all types of fishing.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

OK now I`m with you. I think durable is the word. Thanks for your reply, but I know of some new stuff that has been used on charter and professional fishing boats that are still handling that sort of treatment. Of course, the difference is the price. So I think your reel is in a class on it`s own. Congratulations ,it is a beautiful reel which I would love to own myself.

Sal, it would of been great to see what the reel looked like with a before shot and then after. lol! Maybe next time  ;D

Steve.

Alto Mare

Yes, you're right Steve. I told you that you came up with a great idea and I didn't follow :-\. Maybe on the next one, but my stuff is getting old around here, it's time to step back and give the new guys the stage  ;D.

Nevermind. I'm sure the trained eyes you have for a bargain, it wont be long before you have another project which needs a facelift.  ;D

Btw, your hot rodding/informative posts certainly wont get "old" any time soon, Sal. It was a past post of yours about O ring pulling tools which helped add to my reel service armoury, of which, isn't extensive. http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=1971.0  Very helpful tools to aid pulling (stuborn) bearings out of housings and to remove bearing shields. Thanks!

Bryan, you know what's funny, I've been trying to purchase a right side plate for over a year now. I have a nice 114HL , almost new, with a red spool and the right side plate is damaged by the drag stack. I see many left side plates for sale, but never see a right side plate with the easy access drags.  :-\.

I sold one of those to someone on this forum a few months ago.  Had no idea you were looking.

One of my better eBay deals was a 114H with the Penn full diameter aluminum frame in very good condition.  Cost, with shipping, $63.00.  As I said before, there are deals out there if one is patient enough.

Bryan Young

so you are the one that got that one.   ;)

Very nice job Sal....

you just can't beat those old frames....a couple upgrades and they're bulletproof....

Alan did a couple 112's for me last year and they fished salmon all season with some very nice comments from the users...

Old Penn's forever ;)

Got me another narrow 114HL. This one was a little more than the one above, it cost me $80.
I like to take chances on these, the kit alone costs around $165.

Fish-aholic mentioned that I should be showing before and after, so here you go:
Here are the cleaned parts

I'll be trying the gears that I groved in this one plus the usual ss sleeve ss handle and dogs.
Alan, the sleeve is very tight on this one, I'm not complaning, I like it!
Guys if the sleeve feels tight, don't worry, it will set itself in nicely from using it.
I found some carbon fiber sheets on ebay, Smoothdrags and Scotts don't carry those with the fiberglass reinforcement.
Here is where I got them from:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120960145439?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I have no idea if they will hold up, that's why I installed them in this reel so I could test them.
The ones that I used are 1.10mm thick, if they hold up it would be great, these are very reasonable.
The seller's name is Erik, very nice guy. I'm not sure if he's a member here, I don't think so, but he knew who I was. He sent me extra sheets, he knows about me liking to test things.

and here is the best I could do with this one, still not bad. The person that I got the reel from had everything  lightly greased.
Usually the screw holes on these frames are shot when they look that bad, this one is nice.
