I'm generally a weekend warrior fisher off the boats in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.  Generally I like bottom fishing for NE Sea Bass, but lately the stripers are hitting hard.

I have two Penn GTI 421 reels, both of which are now out of action.  One I brought in for repar at the tackle shopped called Bernies.  the other one I blamed for a bad fishing outing this weel :)  I took it apart to lubricate it and all the small parts came out.  I can't even begin to put it back together at this point so I'm shipping it to Penn for repair, I suppose.

That leaves me with a couple of 1:1 ratio penn reels, the kind you find on the charter boats.  Maybe I should look for something new.  I've always fellt my tackle is too heavy for what I'm doing.  We never ever go below 60 ft.  I'd say the deep bottom fishing in the NY Blight is in the 40 foot range.  And a lot of the fishing is happening in the 15 and 20 foot drops, especially for Stripers and Flounder.  It seems the guys who hit all the big fish are using the light, almost fresh water tackle.  That would make my rod and reel too heavy.

Any thoughts?

Hi Mr Bklyn

How long did Bernie's give you to be completed? Please tell me I need a laugh. I don't know your reel so I can't comment on it. If you fish on the O E or the M J IV you could fish up to 120' for Ling. The sharper guys use 30-40# Braid for that depth. In shore 30# Braid for Sea Bass & I like 30# Mono for porgies. You will fish 6-10 oz of lead.

Hope this helps

Mike

Welcome MrBrklyn,  There are a bunch of guys here that fish in your neck of the woods, and I'm sure they will chime in on your next fishing reel purchase adventure.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

I've been playing with Jig Master Jr lately. Making them Newell's with some of Alan's parts & Keta's parts. After those I have Daiwa 27 H for my Grandson when he gets bigger & a few 50 H to play with.

Mike, no offense ment. You working on a head boat and giving a nod to the Newell's is a hell of an endorsement. I own 5 of them from the 220 on up through the narrow G454. Good reels.

No offence taken. On any weekday you will find 5 Newell's on board. Myself & Captain also 3 Regulars [all Chinese]. As of this weekend I will be using P 220's till Oct.
