Hi all, just received a 113 today in the post and looking for ideas.
Its a older model 113 with black side plates, not the 'h'
With the reel in pieces on my bench All the internals are in good shape but The handle shaft is badly worn and the spool is badly corroded.
Has anyone done anything to the 113 and is it worth it ?

The 4/0 is a cool reel. Most guys on here go for the 113h though. I have been trying to pick up a Black side plate one and haven't had any luck yet. I say replace the spool and sleeve and fish it!

Yes, a few of us have fixed up 113 Senators.  Most of us recommend you install a 1+5 drag washer stack and a stainless gear sleeve.  That should make it a 50 lb reel.  You can also make it narrower and install a Longbeach bridge and pinion gear to increase the retrieve ratio.  It won't replace the great 113H but I still think the black 113 is cool.

Like Bryan Young says, "If the reel is important to you, it's worth fixing."

I'm waiting for a handle side sideplate to finish my 113N 7+1, 2.5:1 "Grouper Special".
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

Hi Sam,

The black side plated 4/0 is a classic...  If the sleeve is already rounded off, look at replacing it with a SS sleeve kit by Alan Tani.   Definitely would recommend CF 5+1 drags.

I would definitely recommend starting a new post in the FOR SALE section if you're looking for parts.  These guys have everything, and are willing to help.

Have fun on your first project and keep us posted with some pics.

The only 113 spool I can part with is a swaged 3 piece. If you want it it is yours.

Thanks folks, I'll give putting a narrow spool and high gear ratio a miss would rather line capacity and low gear for a 15kg trolling reel for tuna ;)
Posted in for sale section, looks  like I have a few options for spools  :)How good is that.
What parts do I need for the 5+1 drag?

Since this reel didn't come with a 5 stack and one was never made, It takes a little customization. These are the exact parts needed from Mystic Reel Parts. There is a place where you can leave a message with your order. Just tell them you need a custom 5 stack for a 113 Black. I copied this from my invoice back in July.
