I was at the PCS show and found an incredible deal (50% off) on the Penn Carnage III boat rods. Picked up 1 and with second thoughts went back and got a 2nd.  Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

The Penn Carnage rods are verry well built mid price rods.  I caught my last cow BFT (212#) on a loaner Westcoast CARWCIII60100C70 7' 60-100 fishing 80# and my16VISX.

A friend and reel repair customer bought a CARWCIII3080C66 6'6 30-80 and someone convinced him that  it was too short. I tried to convince him it was "just right" for pacific halibut  and he "made me" buy it from him for  $85.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

I got in last week a $500 order of Black Label balsa crank baits.  Also, a few reels and rods in past couple months. I found a new/unused Shimano Calais 200Mg-5. I have several from 20+ years ago and love them. Very smooth and well made. I also got a new Stella 2500 with shallow spool and double handle, a 2500 Twin Power with shallow spool, A current Antares DC MD for mid sized swim baits up to 3 oz, and also for A-rigs occasionally, and I have a Megabass P5 destroyer rod Mark 56. It is for mid sized swimbaits and the antares DC MD reel will go on it.
I also cleaned up a few of my older rods to include cleaning, filling, and sealing the cork handles, repairing missing chunks from the cork, inspected all ceramic line guides and replaced one chipped tip top guide, and washed and waxed the entire rod/blanks. They look much better and seem to even feel better, even though I know that is not possible. I have a couple more to recondition in the coming weeks.

Less frequently than they used to, WalMart clearances out some tackle items.  Usually in the fall as lakes are icing up, but this year, in early March.  About 20 nice rods, including some Ugly Stiks $ Abu Garcias, all $10 apiece.  I wanted to grab a bunch, then realized (with my wife watching carefully) that I really didn't need any of the types of rods available; however, I had an Abu Garcia "GenIke"(6 ft., baitcaster, medium action, 1/4-5/8 oz. lure, 8-15 lb. test line, IKEE2C601M) graphite rod at home that I had set aside to rebuild when time permitted.  Very much like one of the clearance rods. Tip had broken off and some of the guides had the ceramic ring popped out.  Bright red with black/silver threads.  Decided to remake as a spinning rod with 6 new guides & a new size 8 tiptop, and "grafted" on an Ugly Stik tip section using the Ralph O'Quinn repair method I usually use for repairs.  Might throw on a DAM Quick Standard 250 I got from another AT member, and with some 12 lb. test line on it, see what she can do on some bigmouth buffalo that will start to run in a few weeks on a nearby river.

Picked up a Penn Slammer SL 2701 AX 7 heavy rod with a Penn Jigmaster 505HS attached, along with a Daiwa Heartland S heavy casting rod with an Okuma CL 200c attached: both combos for $50. Going to probably sell the Okuma reel as it's fresh water, but the graphite rod looks really nice. Going to use the Jiggy for grouper after upgrading the handle and gear sleeve. Also picked up a Penn 113 for $5 at a yard sale to use as a descender reel, and a Dam Quick 1000 on eBay for more than I want to say. The Dam Quick was an impulse buy, but I've heard so many good things about them, and they don't come up for sale all that often. I'm sure I'll be looking for help soon with the Dam Quick after it arrives. Is there a cure for this illness?

I bought two rod/reel combo's at the flea market today. I found a Pflueger Capitol 1985 on a one piece fiberglass rod. The rod has a trigger screwed on to the reel seat.
I also found a Daiwa 1000C on a very new looking modern Shakespeare rod.

I found a lot of nice old stuff tat I left behind. There was a Ru-Mer Pacific with and extra spool, a Mepps Meca, a few Ocean City reels, and a couple Airex reels. I am trying to be more focused with my hoarding. Both the Capitol and the 1000C were reels that had been on my watch list.

Speaking of tackle remember, Fishermans landing Day at the Docks is coming up on April 13th. For those in southern California its a great opportunity to pick up some more. Maybe win some if you play the raffles also, the proceeds of goes to Friends of Rollo to take kids fishing to encourage them to spread our passion for the Sport of Fishing to future generations.
