My Penn 113H Special 4/0 Senator makes a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound in freespool but not when it is in gear.

Does anyone have any ideas why? I have another one and it doesn't make the sound in freespool and this one didn't used to make the sound so I think that something isn't right.

Thanks!

I would try replacing the pinion yoke & eccentric jack first. Sounds like the pinion gear is not fully disengaging from the spool. Its a cheap fix.   Rudy

I've never had it apart but I'll look around on this site and see if I can figure out how to do that.

thanks

Look up the Penn 113h tutorial for the how to in the Penn Senator section. Use the 113h short version.     Rudy

Thats showing the 114h which is very similar except the dog spring in the 113h is a coil spring & the 114h is a flat spring. When youget parts order a few extra dog springs because they go flying real easy & go into never never land.    Rudy

I also found this tutorial for the 111 which looks similar

Can I do the same 1+5 drag washer upgrade on the 113H that he shows for the 111?

Thanks

After you take it apart then check to see if your reel has the updated drags. If it has a 3 drag setup then you can order the 5 drag setup. Check first & if you use carbon fiber drags get some Cal's Drag Grease to coat them. Don't use marine grease on drag washers. If you get the 5 drag set, get the whole set with the metal washers. You can get everything at MysticParts (Scott's ).

Is the sound coming from the right or left? It could also be as simple as a bad clicker spring.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

RowdyW

Hi Sal, if it was the clicker spring wouldn't it make the noise weather or not the free spool was engaged or not?

Alto Mare

Yes Rudy, you're right. I just noticed that Klink mentioned that it doesn't do it when in gear.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah, I replaced the clicker spring because it was worn and the sound started soon after that (I think) but everything looks ok on that side of the reel as near as I can tell.

thanks

Have you got the left bearing adjusted correctly with just a very little side to side play in the spool?

Alto Mare

Tilt the reel to the left keeping the handle up and see if it still does it. Sounds like your spool is going too far to the right.

It doesn't seem to make any difference right or left side up.  Yeah, there is a little play side to side with the spool adjustment knob.  I'm starting to think maybe a bad bearing.... :-\

I tried to get the right side plate off to look at the inside of it but the spool seems to be stuck to it.  Is the right side plate supposed to just lift off or is it connected to the spool somehow?

thanks
