I think those washers are asbestos not leather, they were used for many years, I don't think it's a good indicator of age.

Yep, it's not an AG town, well not as much of an AG town anymore.

Can you post a picture or two of the bombs you used with details?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Thanks akFish and gary760,
This is my first 2 speed so surprised how much resistance between Hi-Lo.
Had a brain fart too, it is a visw not visx.
Helps when I sit down when I have time to look at things and think things out and not on the fly.
After looking at the threads on Alan's forums I believe it would not hurt to do a bit of a service before I use it.
Anything that you can suggest to keep a eye out for would be a help as well.
I want to set it for shore based fishing, my plan is to run 80lb braid with 100-200m of 37kg mono.
Is this a good idea or would there be safer/better options, I'm all ears as a beginner at the LBG scene.
All my prior experience up till now has been boats, that life is rare now.
Anyway thanks for the info, eased my mind a lot  ;D

The only difference between a 221 1:5 high speed and a 220 1:3 regular —- is the main and worm gear, a longer crank for more torque, a 221 badge, and a tiny red S sticker that denotes high speed.  Everything else is identical.

The trick would be finding either a decent 221 donor reel with a good set of gears to rob from, or a set of 221 gears.  Then just do a crank swap and a badge swap.

I have plenty of 220 gear sets —- but the 221's are very rare.

I might have some —- do not know without counting teeth.

It seems like I do maybe one or two of the 221's for clients every month.

Here is one I did a couple of weeks ago.  It was really rough before I restored it using a fair number of new key parts.

These are rare and outstanding reels.  Great size, high speed, strong, versatile.

If you found one, and wanted a full restore to new —- I could do that for you also.

Even if you found a rough one —-the gears would likely be fine.

I might have a few laying around that will eventually be restored to new.

Best, Fred
